Courtney: Why do you keep butting into my life, huh? Don't you have one of your own?
Jax: You know, it's funny you should ask because I was just pondering that very same question.
Courtney: Don't get all weird on me.
Jax: Wouldn't dream of it.
Courtney: You know, you don't seem like the tortured soul type.
Jax: I'm not, I'm just feeling a little introspective. You know, that's why I'm sitting here in the dark on someone else's pier, pondering the meaning of life, love, and the pursuit for happiness.
Courtney: Look, you have obviously chosen me as some kind of personal project or something.
Jax: Courtney, believe me, I'm still recovering from my last personal project, so i don't think I'll be ready for another one any time soon.
Courtney: Yeah, well, you could've fooled me.
Jax: You know, you are a charming young woman when you're not insulting me or assaulting me with a laptop computer. But believe me, you were the last thing on my mind.
Courtney: What is your problem?
Jax: You really want to know?
Courtney: You know what, probably not.
Jax: Ok, well, then good night.
Courtney: You know, you do look kind of tortured, so if you want to tell someone...
Jax: Okay, I, I got caught up in the drama of a very attractive woman who is cruelly misunderstood. Last chance to bail.
Courtney: I'm listening.
Jax: All right.
Jax: She, she was rejected by most of her family. She doesn't have any friends. She's an alcoholic in recovery. And she has a bad reputation, which I think is only partially deserved. She's independent but lonely, yet refreshingly honest about her faults. You know, I think she's, she's unappreciated by everyone else but me.
Courtney: Well, I mean, you obviously get what she's about.
Jax: Yeah. She's, she's charming and generous when she cares about someone. And she's full of surprises. You have this urge to want to defend her when others put her down. In fact, criticism against her only makes you more loyal in her defense. You know, stop me when this starts to sound familiar. Ok, you know, actually, don't, because, because I need to say this. To you, if you're interested, but mostly, to myself. You know, 80% of the stories she told me were fabricated.
Courtney: Did you believe them?
Jax: Sometimes. Other times, I knew she was lying, but I went along with it anyway.
Courtney: Why?
Jax: You know, I don't know. I've been asking myself that same question. Was it stupidity? I don't think so. Lack of experience? Nope, because I've been around the block more than once.
Courtney: So?
Jax: My own arrogance tripped me up. I knew her weaknesses and her faults. I knew exactly how her mind worked in every given situation, she actually told me most of it herself. But I thought that it would be different with me. I thought it'd be different. I wanted to find gold where others had found lead, and I wanted to succeed where others had failed. But, you know, I guess it's that same old lesson, that same old thing that we can't seem to learn, that you cannot change a person. You can't change a person, they've got to want it for themselves.
Courtney: Maybe she honestly thought that she did.
Jax: Yeah, perhaps. But then she is who she is, and I can't change that. The question is, are you going to be as arrogant as I was? For your sake, I hope not. Well, I've said my peace. I've paid my debt. So, Sonny's on his own and so are you. The only thing left to say is good night and good luck.

Skye: Hi.
Jax: Good night, Skye.
Skye: Jax, look, I, I really thought about what you said and, and you have a point. AJ should leave Courtney alone. Nothing good can come of this.
Jax: That's right, it can't.
Skye: Well, I'm really trying to get AJ to see that, and I do think I'm making headway, especially after what happened here today.
Jax: You know, Skye, I might be impressed if AJ and Courtney weren't meeting as we speak.
