Jax: How many times do I need to tell you, Skye? Brenda and I were in love, her mother arrived in town and a few weeks later, she drove them off a cliff. Brenda never came back.
Skye: But that wasn't the end. You went to Europe looking for her. What happened?
Jax: No, it's nothing worth mentioning.
Skye: Jax, come on. I'm not some tabloid reporter fishing for gossip here and I am more than a friend, so I'm just trying to get a handle on the single most important relationship of your life.
Jax: To what end, Skye? Brenda drove into the ocean. Ok? I lost her. What more is there to say?
Skye: Whatever it is that you're keeping inside and guarding like a buried treasure, Jax. Come on I, I let my defenses down with you.
Jax: This isn't a contest, Skye, about who can be the most open.
Skye: Well, I don't think that's very fair. I bared my soul...
Jax: Ok, you know what, Skye? I'd rather not talk about this, ok, so can you please drop it?
Skye: Jax, I care about you. And when something hurts you, I want to try to understand it so I can help.
Jax: You know, Carly was my business partner, but she also became a friend. I think we really started to understand each other. And, believe it or not, we actually bonded. Now, barring a miracle, she's probably dead. Isn't that enough reason to hurt without having to bring Brenda into it?
Skye: You're making my point. You say Carly's probably dead. Do you realize that that's a word that you never use to describe Brenda?
Jax: Well, well, I mean, I hardly, I never mention Brenda at all. I mean, that should tell you something.
Skye: Never once have you referred to Brenda as being dead, Jax. You say she's lost or she's gone or never coming back. It is it too painful to admit?
Jax: You know what, Skye? I asked you to leave this alone, ok?
Skye: Or is there something else that you're hiding?
[Jax storms out]
---------------------------------------
Jax: Why are you even asking me this?! If you need more men, then get some. I don't care how much it costs.
[Knock on door]
Jax: Just keep searching for Carly, ok? Look, I got to go. Call me the minute you have some news.
Jax: What's this?
Bellhop: A bottle of our best champagne and a five-star meal.
Jax: Well, sounds wonderful. I wish I'd ordered it.
[Skye comes out from around the corner]
Skye: I did. [Tipping the bellhop] Thank you.
Bellhop: Thank you.
Jax: What's all this about?
Skye: My way of saying I'm sorry I upset you. I didn't mean to. I actually was trying to help. I thought that it might help you to open up about Brenda, but obviously I was wrong. See, when I gave you the rundown on the real Skye, when I so fearlessly and admirably admitting to being so ruthless and cunning, I neglected to mention that when I try to be wonderful, I usually botch things up. I'm not very good at being sensitive. And, well, you found that out firsthand, and I'm really sorry for making a bad night even worse. So, please, eat something and try to get some sleep, ok?
[She starts to leave]
Jax: Skye, come here.
Skye: So tell me, what are your stress points?
[Jax points to his temple and Skye starts to massage it, he laughs]
Skye: Wrong?
Jax: No, no, just very literal.
Skye: Oh. This isn't helping, is it? Look, I know that you're worried about Carly, but you shouldn't be. She's going to be fine.
Jax: Oh, you sound sure about that.
Skye: I am. Look, I know they found her car in the lake and there was never a body recovered and if that was anybody else, I would say that that is cause for concern. Move over. But Carly? Please, she's too ornery to die a tragic death and much too self-important to drown. I mean, if she did, her ego would probably serve up as an automatic life raft and she'd end up like a beached whale or something.
Jax: Skye...
Skye: Oh, um, I, I'm sorry. I guess comforting isn't my strong suit. I can never seem to find the right words.
Jax: Well, you know, thinking before you speak might help.
Skye: Yeah, I'm going to go. You know, I'm probably the last person that you need right now.
Jax: Wrong again.
Jax: You know, you're wrong about one thing. You know how to make someone feel better, eventually.
Skye: Oh. I think that's the nicest thing that anyone's ever said to me.
[Phone rings]
Jax: Hello, this is Jax. Uh-huh. Yeah, I'll be right there.
Skye: What's the matter? Is it about Carly?
Jax: It was the Belmont Hospital. They've just admitted an unconscious woman who fits Carly's description.
Skye: Hey, are you going to call Bobbie?
Jax: Not yet. I want to be sure first. I don't want to give anyone any false hopes
Skye: Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Look, knock on my door when you get back or call me if that patient does turn out to be Carly.
Jax: I will. You know, why don't you meet me at the lake house.
|
Skye: You sure?
Jax: Yeah, yeah. It'll be nice if you were there when I get back.
Skye: Ok.
Jax: All right. I'll see you.
Skye: See you.
[Skye decides to call Rae]
[Phone rings]
Rae: Rae Cummings.
Skye: Mom, it's me.
Rae: Skye, honey. What is it? Is something wrong?
Skye: No, I, I don't think so. I am having this feeling, though. Something that I've never had before.
Rae: Well, can you try and describe it?
Skye: Well, it's, it's light and sort of bubbly. Kind of like two glasses of champagne, without the alcohol, of course. And, well, I feel kind of weightless, like I can't even keep my feet on the ground, and I smile.
Rae: Well, I don't know. Do I dare say it? Could it be happiness?
Skye: I guess that's what I'm asking. I mean, can someone who's never been happy before just suddenly learn to be?
